Chapter Eleven
Itâs amazing how expressive a dogâs face can be. Luke looks miserable. Thereâs pain in his eyes, and guilt. I sit beside him, and we lean against each other for comfort.
Iâm so tired. We mustâve been tracking Kezia for hours because the day is darkening. The sky, what we can see of it, has turned the deep grey of twilight.
We left before lunch. It canât be that late, surely? Then the reason for the darkening skies becomes clear as rain begins to fall.
Itâs just a spring shower, but a heavy one. Luke and I move as close to a tree trunk as we can, leaning heavily against it for shelter. But the branches are bare of leaves and we get soaked. I look at Luke in despair.
This rain will ruin any chance we have of following Keziaâs scent, I say. Even if we could pick up the trail again. Luke looks dolefully back at me while raindrops splash down on his nose. Five minutes later the rain fizzles out. All that remains is the drip, drip, drip of rainwater falling from the branches and splatting into the mud beneath our feet. We stand up and shake ourselves, sending water droplets flying in all directions.
What now? I ask.
Well, letâs think about it, replies Luke. I think itâs highly unlikely that Keziaâs disappearance has anything to do with Daniorâs followersâ
Yeah, they would have bundled her into a car or something â unless theyâre hiding out in the woods, I say. But that seems unlikely.
Right. They wouldnât hang around once theyâd taken her. So, I reckon Kezia had a vision or she woke in the night and âheardâ someoneâs intentions.
But whose? It could have been anyone from the camps or even one of the villagers, I say. Luke shakes his head, hopelessly.
I look around. Thereâs nothing but trees in all directions. Iâm feeling completely lost in more ways than one. Luke, do you know where we are? I ask nervously.
We were headed back in the direction of your auntâs cottage, I think, says Luke. Iâd guess weâre north of Ludcote.
I close my eyes and think back to the research we did in the library the day before. I picture in my mind the map of the area we studied when we were plotting the disappearances of the teenagers.
You know, I think where we are right now is roughly central to the villages where the teenagers have been disappearing. I open my eyes and look at Luke.
Luke is silent for a few moments as he thinks about it. I think youâre right, Clara, he says excitedly. But maybe weâre a bit too far south. I think we need to go further north. Do you think thatâs why Kezia came this way?
Itâs a bit of a coincidence, if not, I reply uncertainly.
I agree. Letâs take a shot at it. Itâs better than sitting here getting hypothermia. We can always come back here and try something different if we donât find anything, Luke says.
Okay, I say.
