Chapter Eleven

It’s amazing how expressive a dog’s face can be. Luke looks miserable. There’s pain in his eyes, and guilt. I sit beside him, and we lean against each other for comfort.

I’m so tired. We must’ve been tracking Kezia for hours because the day is darkening. The sky, what we can see of it, has turned the deep grey of twilight.

We left before lunch. It can’t be that late, surely? Then the reason for the darkening skies becomes clear as rain begins to fall.

It’s just a spring shower, but a heavy one. Luke and I move as close to a tree trunk as we can, leaning heavily against it for shelter. But the branches are bare of leaves and we get soaked. I look at Luke in despair.

This rain will ruin any chance we have of following Kezia’s scent, I say. Even if we could pick up the trail again. Luke looks dolefully back at me while raindrops splash down on his nose. Five minutes later the rain fizzles out. All that remains is the drip, drip, drip of rainwater falling from the branches and splatting into the mud beneath our feet. We stand up and shake ourselves, sending water droplets flying in all directions.

What now? I ask.

Well, let’s think about it, replies Luke. I think it’s highly unlikely that Kezia’s disappearance has anything to do with Danior’s followers—

Yeah, they would have bundled her into a car or something – unless they’re hiding out in the woods, I say. But that seems unlikely.

Right. They wouldn’t hang around once they’d taken her. So, I reckon Kezia had a vision or she woke in the night and ‘heard’ someone’s intentions.

But whose? It could have been anyone from the camps or even one of the villagers, I say. Luke shakes his head, hopelessly.

I look around. There’s nothing but trees in all directions. I’m feeling completely lost in more ways than one. Luke, do you know where we are? I ask nervously.

We were headed back in the direction of your aunt’s cottage, I think, says Luke. I’d guess we’re north of Ludcote.

I close my eyes and think back to the research we did in the library the day before. I picture in my mind the map of the area we studied when we were plotting the disappearances of the teenagers.

You know, I think where we are right now is roughly central to the villages where the teenagers have been disappearing. I open my eyes and look at Luke.

Luke is silent for a few moments as he thinks about it. I think you’re right, Clara, he says excitedly. But maybe we’re a bit too far south. I think we need to go further north. Do you think that’s why Kezia came this way?

It’s a bit of a coincidence, if not, I reply uncertainly.

I agree. Let’s take a shot at it. It’s better than sitting here getting hypothermia. We can always come back here and try something different if we don’t find anything, Luke says.

Okay, I say.
